Vehicle Safety & Fraud Prevention Guide

Buying a used car should be transparent and secure. Follow our essential checklist when purchasing vehicles from private sellers or motor trade dealers.

1. Essential Pre-Viewing Checks

Before travelling to view any vehicle:

  • Check the MOT History: Use the free official UK Government service (gov.uk/check-mot-history) to review test history, advisory notes, and recorded mileage across consecutive years.
  • Verify Tax & Registration: Confirm the vehicle is currently taxed or SORN via the DVLA vehicle enquiry service.
  • Commission an Independent Provenance Check: While CARWEBB provides automated DVLA MOT and tax status checks, buyers MUST independently commission a comprehensive vehicle provenance check (such as HPI or Experian) to verify:
  • Outstanding vehicle finance.
  • Recorded insurance write-off categories (Cat S - structural repairable, Cat N - non-structural repairable, Cat A/B - scrap).
  • Stolen vehicle markers.
  • Mileage discrepancies (NMR register).

2. Physical Inspection & Vehicle Identity

  • View in Daylight: Always inspect vehicles in good natural light and dry conditions. Rain and darkness obscure bodywork defects and paint blending.
  • Inspect at the Registered Address: When buying from a private seller, always view at the seller's home address listed on the V5C logbook. Never agree to meet in motorway service stations, public car parks, or industrial estates.
  • Check the V5C Logbook: Inspect the genuine V5C registration certificate. Look for the official DVLA watermark when held to light. Check the serial number and issue date.
  • Match the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number): Verify the 17-character VIN stamped on the vehicle chassis (usually under the bonnet or under floor mats) and at the base of the windscreen matches the V5C document exactly.

3. Safe Test Drives

  • Ensure the seller has valid insurance permitting accompanied test drives, or arrange temporary comprehensive drive-away insurance.
  • Test all major functions: clutch bite point, gearbox shifting, steering alignment, braking stability, air conditioning, and dashboard warning lights (ensure warning lights illuminate upon ignition and extinguish properly).

4. Payment Safety & Scam Alerts

  • Payment Safety: CarWebb does not take or hold vehicle reservation deposits. Never send advance deposits or funds for vehicles you have not physically inspected in person.
  • Vehicle Payment: Pay for vehicles only after physical inspection, test driving, and contract execution. Use direct UK Faster Payments bank transfer from your banking app while present with the seller.
  • Red Flags to Avoid:
  • Never pay via Western Union, MoneyGram, cryptocurrency, or gift cards.
  • Never use fake third-party "shipping agent" or "delivery escrow" websites.
  • Beware of vehicles priced substantially below realistic UK market value.

5. Reporting Suspicious Listings

If you encounter a suspicious listing, cloned vehicle, or deceptive seller on CarWebb, tap the Report Listing button on the vehicle page or email support@carwebb.com immediately.
