Frequently Asked Questions
Questions for Buyers
How do I contact a seller or arrange a viewing?
You can message sellers directly from any listing page using the secure CarWebb enquiry form, or request an in-person viewing appointment. You can also view dealer telephone details and showroom addresses on verified dealer listings.
Does CarWebb take vehicle holding deposits?
No. CarWebb does not take or hold reservation deposits for vehicles. All viewing arrangements and sale transactions are arranged directly between the buyer and the seller or motor trade dealer. We advise buyers never to transfer money remotely prior to in-person physical inspection and provenance checks.
What legal rights do I have when buying from a dealer vs a private seller?
- Motor Trade Dealers: You are protected by the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 (DMCC Act 2024). The vehicle must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose, and as described. You have a statutory short-term right to reject within 30 days of delivery if the car has an inherent fault, and rights to repair or replacement thereafter.
- Private Sellers: Private sales are made on a private contract basis. Consumer rights under CRA 2015 Part 1 do not apply to private sales. However, private sellers must accurately describe the vehicle and must not commit fraudulent misrepresentation under the Misrepresentation Act 1967. Always carry out physical inspections and independent HPI checks before completing a private purchase.
What checks should I perform before buying a car?
Always check the vehicle's MOT history online via the DVLA, confirm the road tax status, verify that the 17-digit VIN on the car matches the V5C logbook watermark, and obtain an independent vehicle history check (HPI / Experian) to ensure there is no outstanding finance or insurance write-off record.
Questions for Private Sellers
How do I create a listing on CarWebb?
Enter your vehicle registration mark (VRM) on our Sell page. Our system automatically retrieves manufacturer specifications and MOT history. Upload your vehicle photos, set your asking price, and write condition details. Basic private listings are completely free.
What documents do I need to sell my car privately?
You need your V5C registration certificate (logbook), MOT certificate, service history records and receipts, and both sets of vehicle keys. When handing over the vehicle, complete the change of keeper section online with the DVLA or post section 2 of the V5C.
How do I receive payment safely?
For vehicle transactions, accept payment via direct UK Faster Payments bank transfer into your bank account while present with the buyer. Always verify the funds have cleared in your mobile banking app before handing over the vehicle keys and V5C.
Questions for Motor Trade Dealers
How do motor trade dealers join CarWebb?
Dealers can register via the Dealer Portal. After providing your Companies House registration number, VAT number, and trading showroom address, our team conducts Phase 1 verification to activate your dealer showroom profile.
What does the "Verified Dealer" badge mean?
The Verified Dealer badge signifies that CarWebb has verified the trader's official UK Companies House registration, valid motor trade business identity, and physical forecourt premises.
Are there any hidden fees for buyers on dealer listings?
No. Under CarWebb Dealer Standards and the DMCC Act 2024, all advertised dealer prices must be full on-the-road prices. Mandatory administration or document fees are strictly prohibited.
